We did it!

Earth Hour campaign that is connected with environmental protection and climate changes this year also was held last Saturday of March. Azerbaijan also actively held the campaign in which took part 147 countries and 5000 cities.

This year, Earth Hour with support of IDEA campaign was held in 4 cities of the country. Lights of the “Old City” historical-architectural reserve, Maiden Tower which is a symbol of Baku, Shirvanshah’s Palace, Park Bulvar, Hilton Hotel, Building of ZGAN Holding, Bridge Plaza, Azerbaijan Technical University were switched off. Besides the capital, Ganja, Lankaran, Lahij also supported the campaign.

The biggest switch off event of Earth Hour took place in front of the Maiden Tower. By turning off the lights the youth calls everybody to pay more attention on the protection of our planet. The event was broadcasted online on IRELI TV. The campaign was observed with great attention by the youth and guests of Baku.

Photos and videos of the 7 switched off buildings, of 4 cities were submitted to the central headquarters to Singapore by the team of Earth Hour Azerbaijan.

Lankaran’s first step

Let’s move to the South. Lankaran city is also called Azerbaijan’s South Gate. Bordering with Iran this city has an ancient history and is the 3rd biggest city lying on the Caspian shore.

This year Lankaran youth will join Earth Hour in Azerbaijan for the first time. With a support of local Youth and Sport Department team is going to act! Tomorrow! According to the words of the coordinator Samir Salayev they will switch off the lights of the brightest bridge in the city.

So let’s wish good luck to our new friends!

Ganja is ready

The second big city of Azerbaijan Ganja this year also supports EARTH HOUR campaign.

Ganja as the Youth Capital will be represented in this project by Ganja State University this year. According to the information given us by Vasif Aliyev the coordinator of Ganja city preparations have been already finished. The lights of the main building of Ganja State University will be switched off during an hour.

Our capital is waiting with great impatience for the participation of Ganja, which always competes with Baku.

Preparations in Lahij have finished

This year as the previous, the reserve of Lahij, which is one of the magnificent places of Azerbaijan, joins EARTH HOUR campaign. The participation of this heritage, which is situated on 1500 meters above the sea level, is very important for us.

The coordinator of EH Lahij Kamal Aliyev has informed us that the preparations are almost finished. Most of historical monuments, which are situated in the historical and architectural reserve, will be switched off with the help of the youth of Lahij.

We are anxiously waiting for photos from Lahij.

IDEA to support Earth Hour activities in Azerbaijan

IDEA Campaign (International Dialogue for Environmental Action), founded by Leyla Aliyeva Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation will hold “Earth Hour” action together with “Earth Hour Azerbaijan”.

As one of the directions of activity of IDEA campaign is the problem of climate change, it always support local and foreign campaigns organized to tackle this problem.

The action will run in remarkable buildings consuming large amount of electricity in Baku, Ganja, Lankaran and Lahij. Detailed information about the action is available at www.ideacampaign.org and www.earthhour.az.

Earth Hour is a worldwide event that is organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and is held the last Saturday of March annually, encouraging households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change.

On 26 March 2011, Azerbaijan turned off the lights of the Maiden Tower and thus entered the list of 120 countries supporting the campaign last year.
